Description

The Sun is the G-type main-sequence star at the center of the Solar System and the dominant source of light, heat, and magnetic activity throughout the Solar System. Its visible surface, the photosphere, displays granulation and evolving active regions, including sunspots: relatively cooler areas where intense magnetic fields suppress convective heat transport from below. Although sunspots appear dark or nearly black in white-light solar images, they remain extremely hot and luminous; their dark appearance is caused by contrast with the surrounding, hotter photosphere. A typical sunspot consists of a dark central umbra, where the magnetic field is strongest, surrounded by a brighter filamentary penumbra. Sunspot groups evolve over days or weeks and follow the approximately 11-year solar activity cycle, often marking regions associated with flares, prominences, and coronal mass ejections that can affect space weather
