Object Information
The Triangulum Galaxy (𝑀33, NGC598) is a nearby, face-on spiral galaxy located approximately 2.88 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. With an apparent magnitude of about 5.7, it is the third-largest galaxy in the Local Group, after the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy (𝑀31).
Its loosely wound spiral arms host extensive regions of active star formation, including NGC 604, one of the largest and brightest H II regions in the Local Group. Gravitational interactions, relative motion, and its proximity to Andromeda suggest that 𝑀33 may be a satellite of 𝑀31 or may have experienced a close encounter with it in the past.
