Object Information
NGC7331 is a prominent spiral galaxy in the constellation Pegasus, located approximately 40 million light-years from Earth. Seen at a high inclination, it displays a bright yellowish central bulge, a bluish stellar disk, and conspicuous dark dust lanes that trace its spiral structure. With a diameter broadly comparable to that of the Milky Way, NGC7331 is often considered one of the finest galaxy targets of the autumn sky.
Discovered by William Herschel on 6 September 1784, NGC7331 is the dominant member of this rich extragalactic field. Its apparent isolation is deceptive: close to it in the same line of sight are four faint galaxies—NGC7335, NGC7336, NGC7337, and NGC7340—often informally called the Fleas.
Although these small galaxies appear to surround NGC7331, they are not physical companions. They lie far beyond it, at distances of several hundred million light-years, and their proximity is only a projection effect. Their presence within the same field provides a striking illustration of cosmic depth: the image combines a large nearby spiral galaxy with much more distant background systems seen along nearly the same direction in space.
