Description

This image brings together two celebrated extragalactic targets in the constellation Pegasus. Near the top is NGC 7331, a prominent inclined spiral galaxy approximately 40 million light-years away. Around it lies the visually striking Deer Lick Group, whose faint galaxies — NGC 7335, NGC 7336, NGC 7337 and NGC 7340 — are often nicknamed “the fleas.” Despite their apparent proximity, they are background galaxies located roughly 290 to 370 million light-years away, rather than true companions of NGC 7331.
At the bottom of the frame lies Stephan’s Quintet (HCG 92), one of the best-known compact galaxy groups in the sky. Four of its galaxies are physically interacting at a distance of roughly 290 million light-years, while the apparently associated spiral galaxy NGC 7320 is a foreground object at about 40 million light-years.
