Description

NGC 7023, commonly known as the Iris Nebula, is a striking reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. Its delicate blue glow is produced as light from the young, hot star HD 200775 is scattered by surrounding clouds of interstellar dust.
Discovered by William Herschel in 1794, the Iris Nebula lies about 1,300 light-years from Earth. The bright central region is framed by intricate dark dust lanes and faint, extended nebulosity, creating the flower-like appearance that inspired its popular name.
