Description

Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto are Jupiter’s four largest moons, known collectively as the Galilean moons. Io is the Solar System’s most volcanically active world, reshaped by intense tidal heating from Jupiter. Europa has a fractured icy surface above a likely global subsurface ocean, making it a key target in the search for potentially habitable environments. Ganymede, the largest moon in the Solar System, has a complex ice-and-rock surface, an intrinsic magnetic field, and possible internal oceans. Callisto is an ancient, heavily cratered moon whose ice-and-rock surface preserves a record of early Solar System impacts and may also conceal an ocean beneath its crust.
