Description

NGC 6823 is a young open cluster embedded in the rich star-forming complex Sh2-86 in the constellation of Vulpecula. Its hot, luminous blue stars illuminate and erode the surrounding gas and dust, shaping faint emission structures, dark globules and pillar-like features across the field.
Located roughly 6,000 light-years away, the cluster is about two million years old and spans around 50 light-years. The subtle reddish nebulosity visible around the stellar concentration belongs to this active region, where new stars continue to emerge from the remaining molecular material.
